Alexei Kosskov was born in Los Angeles California on the 8th of April 1987, to an unnamed father and his mother was Svetlana a high class prostitute, one theory is that his father was Mikhail Vasticov the man who owned the escort agency Svetlana worked for.
Alex lived with his mother in a small apartment in LA, their life together was often marred by prolonged periods where Svetlana was working long hours and relied on the kindness of an elderly neighbour to ensure Alex was well cared for during her absences. This continued on until the age of 6, when Svetlana disappeared in the middle of the night, and Alex was taken into the care of the state as a result.
Over the course of the next seven years Alex was placed in twelve foster homes, none of them suited him and he remained there for no longer than six to eight weeks at a time before he returned to life on the streets.
In the summer of 2000 Alex disappeared from his usual haunts in Los Angeles, and was finally located in Phoenix Arizona, he had managed to hitch several rides to Arizona with truckies and tourists headed there. Alex had received a cryptic message indicating that he might find Svetlana in Phoenix Arizona, hence he hit the road to try and find her not trusting the authorities to find her.
Alex never found his mother, a search of the records by his new case worker revealed Svetlana had died in a car accident around the time Alex began the journey towards Arizona, she had perished along with her husband and their two daughters.
Alex was placed into the home of Frank and Annie Cooper who took the wayward teenager into their home without hesitation, Annie was Alex's aunt through the marriage of her brother Edward to Svetlana, and Svetlana had often talked of her son whom she'd abandoned so long ago.
In 2002 Alex was arrested after getting into trouble with the law, he had been reverting back to his street kid life as he grew tired of living with Frank and Annie. Until one night he stole several items from several stores and got into a fight with a shopkeeper which left the man with a broken nose and bruised ribs.
At the time of the Superflu outbreak Alex was detained at the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility, as he awaited his sentencing hearing, he had befriended another detainee, a teenager named Oliver Simcox (real name Barney Fletcher an Immortal).
Alex and Barney were the sole inmates at the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility to survive the superflu, and escaped together when someone let them out of jail.
Once outside the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility the pair at first decided to go their separate ways, Alex had no plans for his future, but the dreams troubled him, he didn't know whether to trust them or not.
Alex reunited with Barney in a store where Barney was in the process of searching for supplies for his journey onto Nebraska, Alex lacking any alternative ideas was going to go with Barney who seemed to know what he was doing and where he was headed.
