History: Shannon was the only child of a doting
father who was a wealthy financier, who lavished gifts on her and
pretty much catered to her every whim. Her mother was a ghost of a
woman who commuted from one mysterious illness to another and spent
the majority of her life ensconced in her bedroom with the drapes
drawn. Shannon's father's only requirement was that she obtain an
education of some sort, which was fairly revolutionary for young
women for that time period, and he didn't set any time limits on her
for obtaining that goal which was a good thing because Shannon was in
no hurry to finish her degree. Her interests lay in languages and
archeology and she played around with collegeand college professors
for years. Almost in spite of herself, and in between parties and
soirees, she actually did rack up some serious knowledge about her
chosen profession, not that she ever actually intended to do anything
about it. She didn't lack for suitors but never accepted any
proposals and her father was beginning to despair of her ever
marrying.
Along came Rupert D'Angelo, charming, mysterious, wealthy, handsome
and thoroughly detested by her father. Naturally, Shannon adored
him. He kept telling her that she was special and there was
something waiting for her `out there' and that he would be her
teacher. Shannon figured she had enough teachers in her life, but
there was something so intriguing about him that she started shutting
her other suitors out and making time only for Rupert and it wasn't
long before she found that she was falling in love with him.
The arguments with her father were getting more heated, though, and
one night Shannon decided it was time to make her way in the world on
her own. She had enough credits to at least find work on an
archeological dig somewhere if it came to actually having to work for
a living. That is, if Rupert didn't want her. She left that night
in a brand new Roadster and a violent thunderstorm. She never made
it to Rupert. The car swerved off a treacherous curve, sailed off a
cliff and head on into a tree and Shannon Myers died at 32 years of
age.
The car was hidden deep over the side of a ravine and no one found
the wreck for over two days; when it was discovered, the horribly
mangled vehicle was empty. That night, a dazed and confused Shannon
was found wandering on the road back to her house, with no memory of
the wreck or how she had managed to survive. Though her clothing was
torn and shredded, she didn't even have a single bruise. Her father,
overwhelmed with relief to have her back alive, allowed no questions
to be asked, and when she asked for Rupert, he didn't object.
Nor did he object when she told him a week later that she and Rupert
were going to be married. It was nearly a year later that Rupert
told her the truth. She had actually died in the car wreck. She was
immortal as was he and he had meant it when he had told her that he
would be her teacher. Somehow she knew he was telling her the truth,
whether because she loved him or because somewhere deep inside she
had felt her own death, she wasn't sure, but she knew he was right.
He was over 900 years old and a strict teacher and hard taskmaster
and she learned quickly and well.
They were together for 30 years when another immortal took Rupert's
head.
Shannon was devastated. And then she was enraged. She took her
considerable inheritance and completed her education, established
herself as an archeologist under new, false identification papers, so
that she would be able to travel where she wanted and set out to find
the man who had killed her husband. She took Rupert's sword as her
own. She started on a long trail, searching for the identity of the
man who had taken Rupert's head and she was ruthless with those who
stood in her path. By the time the flu hit, she had taken 15 heads
and before the last man died beneath her sword, he gave her the name
she sought and the place to find him. Boulder.
